"Our simplest understanding of how a carpet is made, knot by knot only hints at the enormity of the task accomplished by the artists presented here. The word visionary is not too heavy, because the finished work has been carried entirely through the mind's eye to completion. A directional image, of a mountain, say, has been built out of beaches, line by horizontal line. The weaver has few moves: she reaches for yarn; ties and cuts a knot; completes a row; wraps selvedge; raises and lowers the shuttle; inserts weft; beats the weft with a comb; shears sections of pile. It is an old technology that repeats itself over the course of months until finally a carpet is released from the process and unrolled. It's best to take the carpet outdoors in good weather to sweep away the gauzy gray of dirt, dust, and clippings, the woolly afterbirth. What happens at this moment can only be called appreciation: smiles go around in the sunlight.
An event has passed. Time has been spent and rescued. "
