The first "Fish Carpet" (RBI-715) was designed and woven in 1996. In appearance, it looked as if one was viewing a 'slice of the sea': color variations that would be caused by sunlight filtering through the water, and the variety of fish one might come across while swimming in tropical waters.

A member of our design team in Turkey created the graph of the first Fish Carpet, drawing inspiration from antique fish decoy images. The hand-drawn graph was then sent to one of our ateliers in Adiyaman, Turkey. Over a period of 3 months, two sisters, Fatma and Selma Selvisu created the fist version which measured 4' x 6'. In style, the carpet leaned more towards the Folklife carpets where weavers had more freedom in playing with design and color. Initially well received, the "Fish Carpet" has continued to grow in popularity, and is now available in a variety of standard sizes, as well as custom sizes which can be ordered through a Woven Legends dealer.

Standard sizes are as follows:
2' x 2' , 2' x 3' , 3' x 3' , 3' x 5' , 4' x 6' , 5' x 7' , 6' x 9' , 8' x 10' , 9' x 12' , 10' x 14'

A note on color: In standard sizes, the field ground color varies from a yellow-green to blue-green. With a custom order, one can choose a different field ground color.
